DHL Sprint School takes place regularly throughout the year, with sessions divided between the Manchester Velodrome and Newport Velodrome. The programmes for the schools have been developed with help of top British Cycling sprint coaches and are delivered by BC Talent Team and youth coaches. The aim of the schools is to provide coaching and competitive opportunities for young riders who are not already on the superbly successful British Cycling Talent Team.
The schools are open to riders between the ages of 12 and 15 who have track accreditation. Every track league in the country has been approached and are able to nominate 4 riders per school (2 girls and 2 boys where possible) whom they feel would benefit from the schools. The schools have a sports academy feel, with on track training as well Wattbike racing and off-bike workshops on subjects such as nutrition, bike maintenance and racing etiquette.
One of the truly unique aspects of the Sprint School is that it will be supported and led by some of the World’s greatest sprinters; participants in the schools will get the opportunity to meet and learn from established stars like Jamie Staff and Craig MacLean, as well as young talent such as Lizzie Armistead and Adam Blythe. Craig MacLean hopes to see more young cyclists going into sprinting rather than endurance events. “Sprinting is such a specific discipline. I sometimes think it doesn’t get as much support as the endurance events but it is such a fun part of the sport. Getting young riders interested in it from an early age can only help benefit the sport as we head towards the Olympics in 2012.”
DHL is the world’s leading international express and logistics provider, with a network spanning more than 200 countries.
DHL Europe has been sponsoring youth racing at the Revolution series for a number of years in the shape of the DHL Future Stars. Their sponsorship was always intended to serve as a springboard for developing further youth development initiatives, from which Sprint School was born.
Guy Elliott, CEO DHL,is enthusiastic about the Sprint School format. "We are aiming to attract more young people to the sport and provide them with a fantastic opportunity to learn from our top riders. We hope some of these aspiring young riders are able to kick start their cycling careers and gain access to the 2012 Olympic Development Programme through attending Sprint School.”
The main objective is:
Sprint School is open to any cyclist between 12 and 15 years of age who belongs to a track league and has track accreditation. If you are interested in attending, you will need to speak to the designated coach at your track league who handles the nominations for Sprint School. Each coach can nominate a maximum of 4 riders (male and female) per school from the league.
If you don’t know which coach to speak to, or you don’t currently belong to a track league then drop us an email and we will let you know how you can qualify to come to one of the schools.
